Sandfire, in conjunction with the Ghanzi District Council, commissioned 80 solar-powered streetlights at Kuke. Kuke is a remote village located approximately 35km northeast of Sandfire’s Motheo Copper Operations. Solar street lighting was one of six priority community development projects planned for the Kuke village area through a partnership with Ghanzi District Council, Kuke village leadership and the local community.
The solar-powered streetlights improved safety along the A3 highway that passes through Kuke, and provided much needed lighting infrastructure to communal areas in the village, the Kgotle (tribal administrative office), the local primary school, and the health care post. The project involved the installation of 80 streetlights, solar panels, and a battery system.
Sandfire’s contribution included the provision of materials, technical expertise, and volunteers to support the implementation of the project.
The project contributes to UN SDG Goal 7 and our climate change pillar by providing access to renewable electricity.

Proyecto de alumbrado solar en Kuke
Sandfire, en colaboración con el órgano de gobierno del distrito de Ghanzi, puso en marcha 80 luminarias solares en la localidad de Kuke. Kuke es una localidad remota ubicada aproximadamente a 35 km al noreste del centro de operaciones de cobre de Motheo. El alumbrado solar de las vías públicas fue uno de los seis proyectos de desarrollo comunitario prioritarios previstos para la localidad de Kuke, gracias a una colaboración con el órgano de gobierno del distrito de Ghanzi, las autoridades de Kuke y la comunidad local.
El alumbrado solar ayudó a mejorar la seguridad a lo largo de la carretera A3 que atraviesa Kuke y proporcionó la infraestructura luminaria tan necesaria a zonas comunes de esta localidad, la oficina administrativa local (conocida como «Kgotle»), la escuela de educación primaria y el puesto de atención sanitaria. El proyecto implicó la instalación de 80 luminarias, paneles solares y un sistema de baterías.
La aportación de Sandfire se materializó a través de la provisión de materiales, pericia técnica y personal voluntario para apoyar la puesta en marcha del proyecto.
El proyecto contribuye al ODS 7 de la ONU, y a nuestro compromiso frente al cambio climático, ofreciendo acceso a la electricidad renovable.
