Sandfire operates the MATSA Mining Operations, located in the Huelva Province of south-western Spain.
Sandfire completed the US$1.865 billion acquisition of the MATSA Operations in February 2022, delivering a new cornerstone operation that has immediately elevated the Company into one of the largest copper-focused producers on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). With a 4.7Mtpa processing plant located to the north of the Iberian Pyrite Belt that sources ore from three underground mines, Aguas Teñidas and Magdalena Mines in Almonaster la Real and the Sotiel Mine in Calañas, MATSA produces copper, zinc and lead mineral concentrates that is shipped from the port of Huelva.
For the 5 months to 30 June 2022, MATSA is forecast to produce 26,000t of contained copper and 37,000t of contained zinc at a forecast C1 cash cost of US$0.94 per pound of payable copper. The Company will provide further production and cost guidance, including guidance for FY2023, in July 2022.
Work is underway to optimise and implement a 5-year Plan for MATSA aimed at lifting mine productivity and expanding mill throughput to 4.7Mtpa and beyond.
The surrounding exploration package, located in the world-class Iberian Pyrite Belt, comprises a 2,450km2 tenement holding spanning Spain and Portugal, offers Sandfire substantial long-term exploration upside and organic growth potential.
Sandfire MATSA has a highly skilled workforce, with approximately 80% of staff employed from local towns in the Huelva province, and an experienced in-country management team.
