The Mining Water Living Lab Project

At our MATSA Copper Operations in Southern Spain, water management is a critical component to the sustainable operation of our mines.

Co-funded by the European Union, Sandfire is collaborating with Life Remine Water, a project which has recently launched a new initiative called the “Mining Water Living Lab”. This project is aimed at researching and developing innovative water treatment solutions, to promote the recovery and reuse of water in the mining industry.

The Mining Water Living Lab is a pilot plant taking place in Aguas Teñidas Mine’s facilities. The initiative seeks to progress from a linear economy to circular economy model and will minimise the amount of water returned to the environment by recovering up to 90% of water for subsequent reuse.

The innovative system will be powered by solar thermal energy, reducing the plant’s carbon footprint, and making the process more environmentally and economically efficient.

The project is coordinated by Cetaqua Barcelona, a not-for-profit organisation which integrates research, technological development, and innovative projects on the water cycle.
