Building a resilient, responsible and future–ready mining industry

As the platinum sponsor of the Future of Mining Summit 2026, Sandfire was proud to contribute to important industry conversations on shaping the future of mining in Botswana and reinforcing the role of responsible resource development in supporting national economic transformation.

Jamie Caratti, Sandfire Motheo Asset President, and Onalenna Candy Godie, General Manager – Motheo Operations, shared their perspectives on the opportunities and responsibilities facing the industry, including the evolving regulatory and compliance landscape, workforce expectations, technological advancement, rising costs and increasing ESG priorities.

Through his presentation, Mining Copper Sustainably to Energise Botswana’s Economic Transformation Agenda, Jamie reaffirmed Sandfire’s commitment to deepening partnerships with the Government of Botswana to support economic diversification and deliver long-term, sustainable growth.

He highlighted that sustainability is not a standalone initiative at Sandfire, it is embedded in our day-to-day operations. From prioritising the health, safety and wellbeing of our people to investing in community development guided by the focus areas of health, education, women’s empowerment and youth development programmes, Sandfire remains focused on creating shared value beyond the life of mine.

Jamie also reflected on Sandfire’s environmental commitments, including our ambition to achieve a net gain in key biodiversity values and progress on our decarbonisation journey through renewable energy initiatives.

During the leadership fireside discussion, Candy said the future of mining will be shaped by how successfully organisations integrate operational excellence with sustainability, innovation and long-term value creation.

At Sandfire, this means investing in our people, strengthening digital capability, embedding ESG considerations into everyday decisions and building partnerships that create meaningful impact.

Reflecting on the role of leadership, Candy noted that technology should empower people, not replace them, and that sustainable growth depends on resilient teams, inclusive workplaces and communities that thrive alongside mining operations.
