Sandfire wins Golden Gecko Award

Sandfire is the 2019 winner of the Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence in recognition of the DeGrussa Solar Farm. Awarded by the WA Department for Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, the Golden Gecko recognises leading practice and innovation in environmental management.

Since coming online in 2016, the solar farm’s 34,080 solar photo-voltaic panels have reduced Sandfire’s carbon emissions by 30,789 tonnes and offset 11 million litres of diesel. The facility accounts for 17-20% of the mine site’s power requirements and represents a significant environmental saving.

According to the judges, the impact of the project extends far beyond the boundaries of the DeGrussa mine.

“The DeGrussa Solar Project has provided a blueprint for the adoption of renewable energy at other mine-sites around the world”, the judges said.

“The project has been visited by mining companies, government representatives, universities and schools, and has been showcased around the world to educate the global mining industry about how to transition to renewable energy.”

The Golden Gecko was first awarded in 1992 with the aim to celebrate leading environmental management and share experiences between industry, government and the community.
